Why Mind Wandering Is a Training Repetition

Meditation, Noticing & Returning

In meditation, the win is not an empty mind; the win is the return, again and again.

The Science

  • Attention wanders because the brain generates thoughts, plans, and self-talk automatically.
  • Noticing that you wandered means you have already woken up inside the loop.
  • Gently returning to breath, sound, or body sensation is the repetition that strengthens attention.

The Protocol

  • Start with one minute if five feels like too much.
  • Use breath, sound, or a body sensation as your return point.
  • Count each noticing-and-return as the repetition, not as a failure.
