Your Phone Can Pull Focus Without Buzzing

Intermittent Reward & Attention Capture

Your phone can pull attention before it buzzes, because your brain learned the possibility, even in your pocket.

The Science

  • A silent phone becomes a slot machine when the next check might hold social reward or status.
  • That uncertain, intermittent reward keeps part of your focus system on standby, just in case the feed changed.
  • Social media adds comparison and speed, so the pull is learned, not a sign the device is evil.

The Protocol

  • Park the phone face down and farther than arm's reach during one important block.
  • Notice the first urge to check without obeying it right away.
  • Use phone-away moments with friends as a social reset, not a punishment.
