Episode 112 · Focus & Attention
When Noise Helps You Focus
Silence is not always the cleanest focus setting. Sometimes a little steady noise makes the signal easier to hold. Your auditory system keeps sampling the room, even when you are trying not to listen.
The Science
- The auditory system keeps sampling the environment even while you work.
- Studies show low intensity white noise can improve auditory working memory performance.
- The useful pattern is steady, low level sound that masks sudden distractions without becoming a target of attention.
The Protocol
- Use plain, steady sound at low volume for one work block.
- Stop if the sound becomes interesting or pulls attention.
- Keep volume conservative, and do not turn focus sound into sleep sound.
