Why Pain Is More Than Damage

Nociception, Pain & Context

Pain is not a volume meter bolted to the body. The nervous system does not just measure damage. It interprets threat. Two people can have the same tissue signal and very different pain.

The Science

  • Nociception, the body's damage signaling, is not the same as pain, which includes perception and interpretation.
  • Pain is shaped by physical signals, attention, context, memory, and expectation.
  • Safe movement and calmer threat appraisal can give the system evidence that lowers its danger setting.

The Protocol

  • Do not ignore new, spreading, intense, or injury linked pain.
  • For ordinary aches, give the system safe evidence through gentle range and slow breathing.
  • Track whether movement becomes easier as threat drops.
