A thought can vanish while you are still using it. You were not trying to forget. The mental workbench got crowded. Working memory is the few pieces you can hold while you use them.

The Science

  • Working memory holds a small batch of information only long enough to use it.
  • Working memory and attention are tightly linked, because the held items guide the next action.
  • Dopamine tone follows an inverted U: too little or too much can hurt working memory performance.

  • Shrink the batch before you try harder.
  • Externalize one step on paper or a checklist.
  • Close extra input until the current step is finished.
